GW Softball Falls to Saint Joseph's on Sunday

WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball squad dropped its regular-season home finale to Atlantic 10 foe Saint Joseph's on Sunday afternoon at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials (22-25, 9-11 A-10) scored one in the first in the rain delayed series finale, but the Hawks (20-23-1, 8-11-1 A-10) notched 12 hits en route to a five-inning 12-1 win.
A pair of GW errors in the first combined with three SJU hits led to four runs to begin the game. The Colonials responded in the bottom of the inning as sophomore Alana Anderson led off with a single and then scored on a double down the left field line by classmate Rochelle Draper to put the score at 4-1.
SJU struck again in the third as a double and a single plated one for the Hawks to increase their lead to 5-1.
Saint Joseph's broke the game open in the fourth, tallying seven runs on five hits and two errors to take a 12-1 lead. GW was retired in order in the fourth and fifth as the game ended early by virtue of the run rule.
The Buff and Blue continue to battle for a spot at the Atlantic 10 Championship next weekend at Saint Louis. The Colonials will take on the Billikens for a three-game set in the final weekend of regular-season play.
