ST. LOUIS - The George Washington softball squad dropped both ends of an Atlantic 10 doubleheader at Saint Louis on Saturday afternoon at the Billiken Sports Center.
The Colonials jumped out to an early lead in game one with one run in the top of the first. Sophomore Alana Anderson led off with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by classmate Rochelle Draper. A wild pitch allowed Anderson to advance to third then score on a single by junior Megan Linn to give GW the early lead.
In the bottom of the third, a double, a ground out and a walk put runners on the corners for the Bilikens. A throwing error on a first-and-third play then allowed one run to score. A fielding error again put runners on first and third for SLU. Both runners later scored on a double to give the hosts a 3-1 advantage after three innings of play.
The Colonials responded in the top of the fourth after junior Paige Kovalsky and senior Morgan Matetic were hit by pitches in consecutive at bats. A single by freshman Riley Tejcek plated Kovalsky to put GW within one, 3-2.
Saint Louis added insurance in the bottom half of the frame, using a walk, a sac bunt and two singles to regain a two-run edge over GW. A wild pitch scored another before a two-run home run followed by a double and a single put SLU ahead, 8-2, after four.
The Billikens closed the game in the sixth inning, scoring two runs on two hits, a walk and an intentional walk to take the opening game, 10-2, by virtue of the run rule.
Anderson, Linn, Tejcek and senior Carlee Gray accounted for GW's four hits in the contest.
SLU scored first in the nightcap with two runs in the opening frame on a walk, error and a two-run single.
The Billikens added another in the third after a pair of runners reached on back-to-back singles to start the stanza. Another single loaded the bases and a walk pushed one run across for Saint Louis to take a 3-0 lead.
SLU added one more in the fourth on two hits and a sacrifice fly.
Saint Louis put the game out of reach in the fifth, tallying three runs with the help of two home runs to jump out to a 7-0 lead.
The Colonials attempted to rally late as sophomore Sarah Costlow singled to start the inning and was followed by a walk for freshman Ashley Schnarrs. A run later scored on a SLU throwing error, but GW would not score again and the game ended in a 7-1 defeat for the Colonials.
Costlow (2-for-3) grabbed her first career hits in game two - both singles - as GW posted eight hits. Linn (2-for-3), Tejcek (2-for-3) also posted multi-hit games.
The Colonials (22-27, 9-13 A-10) look to prevent the series sweep in Sunday's regular-season finale beginning at 1 p.m. ET.
