WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's rowing team earned a pair of second-place finishes in the Varsity 4 and 2nd Varsity 8 to total 28 points and place fifth in the Howard W. Wilkens Bowl standings on the final day of the George Washington Invitational on the Potomac River.
Saturday's schedule was compressed and accelerated in anticipation of inclement weather and poor racing conditions forecasted for mid-morning and the remainder of the afternoon.
Conditions in the early morning on the Potomac featured calm water with a slight tail current plus light and variable winds.
The racing format switched to three boats per race as opposed to the normal dual-race format.
The Varsity 8 race was the first of the day, with Navy taking first place in 6:32.50 ahead of MIT (6:37.50) and GW (6:42.90).
GW's 2nd Varsity 8 placed second in its race, totaling a time of 6:59.60. Navy won in 6:49.60 with MIT taking third place in 7:14.60.
In the Varsity 4, GW finished in second place with a time of 7:46.20, ahead of MIT (8:11.10). Navy won the race in 7:26.60.
The 3rd Varsity 8 placed third (7:23.30) in a race against Navy (7:07.10) and Saint Joseph's (7:23.30) to conclude the event.
Navy won the Wilkens Bowl with a total of 72 points, followed by URI (63), Georgetown (41), Saint Joseph's (31), GW (28) and MIT (17).
GW returns to action on April 17 when it faces Duquesne, Eastern Michigan and Buffalo in a series of races on the Occoquan River in Woodbridge, Virginia.
