OCCOQUAN, Va. - The George Washington women's rowing team swept the competition in the morning session ahead of a solid afternoon flight at the George Mason Invitational on Sunday afternoon on the Occoquan River.
The format for the invitational was dual racing. The Colonials faced Atlantic 10 rival Duquesne in the morning session, defeating the Dukes across four races. In the afternoon session, the Colonials beat Buffalo in three out of four races.
"I was very happy with our racing today," said Head Coach Eric Carcich. "The team, from top to bottom, did a very good job while racing in great conditions. Also, a special thanks to the George Mason staff for putting together this invite. It was run beautifully. I'm really looking forward to getting back to work on Tuesday in preparation for the George's Cup and Class of 1998 Trophy races next weekend."
The Colonials posted the fastest times across all six competing crews in all four races in the morning session. The Varsity 8 logged a time of 6:42.80, besting Duquesne in the dual by five seconds.
The 2V8 followed suit with a win over the Dukes by three seconds.
The biggest margin of the morning session was recorded by the Varsity 4, which completed the 2,000-meter course in 7:43.80. The next closest time was recorded by Delaware (7:54.70) while Duquesne finished in 7:55.80.
GW's Varsity 4B also notched a win in the morning session with a time of 8:03.40.
The momentum carried over to the afternoon session as the Colonials notched dual-race wins over Buffalo in the Varsity 8, 2V8 and Varsity 4.
GW returns to the Occoquan River next Sunday for the annual George's Cup (vs. George Mason and Georgetown) and Class of 1998 Cup (vs. Georgetown).
