WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team split a series-opening doubleheader with A-10 foe Saint Joseph's on senior day at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus on Saturday.
GW honored seniors Carlee Gray, Morgan Matetic and Maura Murphy prior to first pitch in a senior day ceremony.
The Colonials (22-24, 9-10 A-10) fell, 2-1, in game one before taking a 4-0 victory over the Hawks (19-23-1, 7-11-1 A-10) in the nightcap as sophomore Sarah Costlow went the distance in the circle in both contests.
GW struck first in a victorious game two, scoring a pair of runs with the help of an error in the first. Sophomore Alana Anderson led off the frame with a single and swiped second before junior Megan Linn was hit by a pitch to put two runners on. Gray then reached on an error to load the bases for Matetic, who singled to short to score GW's first run of the game. A fielder's choice by freshman Riley Tejcek plated another as GW took a 2-0 lead after one inning of play.
The Buff and Blue tacked on two more in the third, this time with the help of two SJU miscues. Gray reached first on a two-out error then scored on a Matetic double. A Tejcek ground ball to first was then mishandled, allowing Matetic to score and giving GW a 4-0 advantage.
Costlow (13-11, 2.16 ERA) tossed a strong game two, shutting out the hawks in a complete game effort while scattering just four hits without yielding a walk en route to the victory.
Matetic (2-for-3, 2 RBI, 1 Run) and sophomore Rochelle Draper (2-for-3) tallied multi-hit performances in game two to lead the Colonials.
In game one, sophomore Morgan Rinehart struck early for the Colonials, smacking a solo home run in the bottom of the first for GW's only hit of the game to give the Buff and Blue a 1-0 lead.
Costlow held Saint Joseph's scoreless until the sixth, when four singles plated one for the Hawks to tie the game at 1-1. SJU tallied the tying run in the seventh after a leadoff double and a ground ball put a runner in scoring position with one out. A single gave Saint Joseph's a 2-1 lead.
The Colonials went down in order in the seventh as the Hawks took game one.
GW returns to the diamond on Sunday for the series finale, hosting a single game with Saint Joseph's at noon at the GW Softball Field.
