WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team fell in both ends of a series-opening doubleheader to Atlantic 10 foe Massachusetts on Saturday afternoon at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials (21-22, 8-8 A-10) dropped a well-pitched, 2-0, decision in the opener, before Massachusetts (17-21, 10-5 A-10) got the bats going in game two to take the nightcap, 9-1, in five innings.
Sophomore starter Sarah Costlow yielded just four hits in a complete game effort to start the day. A two-run third inning proved to be the difference as three hits, a walk and a hit batter led to the only two runs of the game.
Sophomore Alana Anderson tallied two of GW's five hits in the game, but the Colonials were unable to push a runner beyond second base in the contest. Meg Colleran went the distance in the circle for the Minutewoman to earn the victory.
Massachusetts struck early in the nightcap, using a solo home run and a two-run dinger to take a 3-0 lead in the first frame.
Another long ball in the second added one more for the Minutewomen.
Two more runs for UMass in the third touched home on a hit batter, two hits and a sacrifice fly. The Colonials answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame, beginning when sophomore Rochelle Draper worked a one-out walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Junior Megan Linn then smacked an RBI double to right field to plate Draper and cut Massachusetts' lead to 6-1.
UMass put the game out of reach in the fifth, as a three-run home run by Olivia Godin increased the lead to 9-1.
GW mustered one hit in the bottom half of the inning but was unable to score, ending the game by virtue of the run rule. Linn recorded two of the Colonials' three hits in game two.
The Colonials return to the diamond on Sunday for the series finale with UMass at 12 p.m. at the GW Softball Field at the Mount Vernon Campus. The Colonials will don gold laces for pediatric cancer awareness.
