WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball squad fell in Sunday's series finale with Atlantic 10 foe Massachusetts, 4-2, at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials (21-23, 8-9 A-10) donned gold laces in support of pediatric cancer awareness, and Go 4 the Goal hosted an information table on the sunny Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore starter Sarah Costlow held the Minutewomen hitless until the third inning, when a GW error led to four runs on two hits, including a two-run home run, to give Massachusetts a 4-0 lead.
A pair of hits and a ground ball gave the Colonials two runners in scoring position in the third, but GW was unable to score.
In the bottom of the sixth, junior Megan Linn led off with a walk and advanced to second on a single by classmate Paige Kovalsky. A double steal then led to an error, allowing Linn to touch home and put the Colonials on the board. An RBI single by senior Carlee Gray cut the deficit in half, 4-2.
Costlow was solid the rest of the way, allowing just three hits through the final four innings, but closed the game with the tough-luck loss as four unearned runs proved to be the difference in the game.
For the second game this series, sophomore Alana Anderson contributed a team-best two hits for the Colonials. Linn swiped her 15th base of the season, putting her just two steals shy of snapping GW's all-time career mark of 72.
The Buff and Blue wrap regular-season home play next weekend as Saint Joseph's visits the GW Softball Field for a three-game set.
