WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball squad out-slugged local rival Georgetown on Wednesday evening, taking a 13-11 victory in the Colonials' non-conference finale at the Hoyas' Guy Mason Field.
GW (21-20, 8-6 A-10) tallied a season-high 17 hits while matching a season-best with 13 runs, scoring in all but two innings, while the teams combined for 31 hits on the day.
The Colonials started the scoring early with four runs in the first. Junior Megan Linn and sophomore Morgan Rinehart led off the game with back-to-back singles and both runners entered scoring position on a passed ball. Sophomore Alana Anderson then singled to drive in GW's first run before stealing second in a first-and-third situation. Yet another single, this time by senior Morgan Matetic, plated another for GW before classmate Carlee Gray doubled to put the Buff and Blue ahead by three. A single by rookie Riley Tejcek - GW's sixth hit of the frame - scored the final run of the inning for the Colonials.
Georgetown answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning as a walk, a sacrifice bunt and a single scored one for the Hoyas. Another single and a walk loaded the bases before a passed ball allowed the second run to score, cutting GW's lead to 4-2 after one inning of play.
Sophomore Rochelle Draper led off the second with a double to begin another run of scoring for GW. A single by Linn put two runners on for junior Paige Kovalsky, who smacked her third home run of the season to give the Colonials a 7-2 lead before the side was retired.
In the third, Tejcek blasted her first career home run, a solo shot to left center, to account for GW's third consecutive inning of scoring and give the Buff and Blue an 8-2 advantage.
The Hoyas closed the gap in the fourth, tallying five runs on a walk and three hits - including a three-run dinger to left center - to come within one of the Colonials.
GW added some cushion in the fifth when Matetic worked a one-out walk and later scored on a single by Tejcek. With runners on first and second, sophomore Aiyana Leal-Robles singled to load the bases before Linn was hit by a pitch to give the Colonials a 10-7 lead.
The Hoyas tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, starting the stanza with a single and an RBI triple. A walk and a two singles plated two more to knot the game at 10-10.
In the top of the seventh, Tejcek smacked a triple to right field for her fourth and final hit of the game - marking a career high and tying a program record for hits in a game - to lead off the inning. Leal-Robles then walked and was replaced by freshman Ashley Schnarrs on the bases, who promptly stole second. A ground ball by Linn scored the go-ahead run before a Rinehart triple plated one more. Anderson followed with a double to give GW a 13-10 advantage.
Georgetown (8-30) fought in the seventh but came up short as a single, a walk and an RBI ground ball scored one, but the Hoyas could not catch the Colonials as GW grabbed the 13-11 victory.
Kovalsky grabbed the win after tossing 3.1 innings of relief.
All nine Colonials to appear at the plate recorded hits in the marathon battle of the bats. Tejcek (4-for-4, 3 RBI, 2 Runs) led the charge, wrapping the game just a double shy of the cycle. Matetic (3-for-4, RBI, 2 Runs), Linn (2-for-4, 2 RBI, 2 Runs), Rinehart (2-for-5, RBI, 2 Runs) and Anderson (2-for-5, 2 RBI) also tallied multi-hit games.
GW returns home after six consecutive road games to host Massachusetts for a three-game weekend set, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
