KINGSTON, R.I. - The George Washington softball team swept Rhode Island in Atlantic 10 doubleheader action on Sunday to win a three-game series at the URI Softball Complex.
Sophomore Sarah Costlow (12-8, 2.40 ERA) earned a complete game win in game one as the Colonials (20-20, 8-6 A-10) utilized late scoring to come out on top, 5-4. Another late game surge heeled GW a triumph in game two, 6-3, to win the series following a loss on Saturday.
Rhode Island (12-22, 3-9 A-10) got on the board first in game one, using a one-out error to get momentum going in the second inning. A single and a fielder's choice left runners on first and second with two outs before a walk and another error allowed one to score before the side was retired to give the Rams a 1-0 lead.
Neither team would score again until the bottom of the fifth, when a double and a walk put two runners on with two outs for the Rams. A pinch hit single then plated a run for URI.
The Colonials answered back in the top of the sixth when sophomore Morgan Rinehart led off the inning with a single up the middle. Junior Paige Kovalsky later tallied a single of her own before a double steal induced an errant throw by the catcher to allow Rinehart to score and cut GW's deficit to 2-1.
Rhode Island went out to a 4-1 lead in the sixth with the help of a two-run triple down the right field line.
The Buff and Blue came out strong in the top of the seventh, working a pair of walks to start the frame. Back-to-back doubles by junior Megan Linn and Rinehart tied the game at 4-4. Kovalsky later chipped in with a double of her own to put GW ahead, 5-4.
The Rams threatened in the bottom of the seventh, working the bases loaded with one out, but Costlow closed the final inning without damage to solidify the 5-4 victory for the Colonials.
Rhode Island again scored first in the nightcap, when a walk and a double led to a run in the first stanza. A GW misuse then allowed another run to cross the plate as the Rams took a 2-0 lead after one inning.
Another double by URI was stranded in the second, as Kovalsky entered the circle in relief of freshman Jayme Cone to get the final two outs of the inning and halt the Rams' threat.
GW strung together four hits for three runs in the top of the fifth as Linn led off the inning with a single and promptly stole second. Rinehart's RBI single gave the Colonials their first run of the inning before stealing second and advancing to third on an Alana Anderson single to left. Anderson followed suit with a stolen base of her own to set the stage for a two-run Kovalsky single to put the Buff and Blue ahead, 3-2.
A pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases for the Rams in the bottom of the fifth and a wild pitch tied the game at 3-3.
The Colonials struck again with a trio of runs in the top of the seventh when Anderson worked a walk to start the inning. Kovalsky's sacrifice bunt attempt resulted in an error before senior Morgan Matetic put a pair of runners in scoring position with a well-executed sac bunt. Senior Carlee Gray then doubled in both runners, and sophomore Rochelle Draper smacked a double of her own to plate GW's third and final run of the inning for a 6-3 Colonials lead that would last to complete the sweep.
Rinehart (5-for-7, 2 RBI, 3 Runs) led the Colonials offensively on the day as GW tallied 18 hits in two games, bouncing back after Saturday's two-hit series opener.
With her stolen base in game two, Linn sits just three swipes shy of snapping the program record for career stolen bases (72) currently held by Amanda Zakeri ('13).
The Colonials conclude a stretch of six consecutive road games on Wednesday at cross-town rival Georgetown for a single game.
