WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team continues a stretch of six consecutive road games with a three-game set at Rhode Island, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday before the series finale on Sunday.
The Colonials (18-19, 6-5 A-10) split a midweek Atlantic 10 doubleheader at Revolutionary Rival George Mason on Wednesday. Sophomore Sarah Costlow tossed a complete game to lead GW to a 3-1 victory in the opener. Costlow (11-7, 2.42 ERA) has posted an impressive 5-1 record in conference play while accumulating a 1.63 ERA against league opponents.
Juniors Monica Macchiarulo and Megan Linn continue to be a powerful duo at the plate, leading the team with .391 and .388 averages, respectively. Linn has scored a team-high 31 runs this season, while classmate Paige Kovalsky (.310) has driven in a team-best 22 runs.
"Every series is an opportunity for us to climb higher in the standings," said head coach Stacey Schramm. "There is no question that this team is determined and committed to one goal. As long as each player produces and executes our plan, we are a very tough team to beat."
Rhode Island (11-18, 2-7 A-10) has fallen in its last four contests - all Atlantic 10 games. Last weekend the Rams dropped the last two games in a three-game set at Saint Louis before falling in both ends of a midweek doubleheader at Massachusetts on Wednesday. URI will host UMass Lowell for a pair of games on Thursday before the Colonials visit Kingston, Rhode Island.
Marylynn Muldowney paces the Rams with a .302 average, while Kylie Sivery (.281) has driven in a team-best 24 runs. In the circle, Becca Rogers leads URI with an 8-5 record and 3.29 ERA. Rogers has held opposing batters to a .232 average, allowing 73 hits through 83.0 innings of work.
Last season the Colonials swept URI in a three-game set; GW leads the all-time series with the Rams, 17-8.
First pitch on both Saturday and Sunday is slated for 12 p.m. at the URI Softball Complex.
