GW Softball Splits A-10 Doubleheader

FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Washington softball team split a Revolutionary Rivalry doubleheader at George Mason on Wednesday at the George Mason Softball Complex.
GW (18-19, 6-5 A-10) took the opener, 3-1, before dropping the nightcap to the Patriots, 3-0.
The Colonials scored first in game one as junior Megan Linn led off the third with her fourth triple of the season. Sophomore Morgan Rinehart promptly singled through the right side to score Linn and put GW ahead. Rinehart then advanced to second on a ground out and reached third on a single by junior Paige Kovalsky. An error by the catcher allowed Rinehart to cross home, giving the Colonials a 2-0 lead after three innings.
Mason (17-17, 4-6 A-10) got on the board in the fifth after two singles and a double plated one run.
GW added an insurance run in the sixth as senior Morgan Matetic led off the frame with a walk. A single by classmate Carlee Gray put two runners on before another error on the catcher allowed Matetic to score.
The Patriots threatened with two hits in the sixth, but sophomore starter Sarah Costlow (11-7, 2.42 ERA) maintained control and completed the game without allowing another run to lead GW to a 3-1 victory in her 11th complete-game effort this season.
Mason came out swinging in game two, notching two quick runs in the first on four singles to take an early, 2-0, lead.
The Colonials threatened in the fourth as three of GW's five hits of the game loaded the bases with one out, but the Buff and Blue were unable to score.
The Patriots added another in their half of the fourth, using a single, a double and a sacrifice fly to move ahead, 3-0.
Mason held GW scoreless for the remainder of the contest to split the day of Atlantic 10 competition.
Kovalsky led GW with a 3-for-5 effort at the plate.
The Colonials continue conference play at Rhode Island with a three-game weekend set, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
