ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - The George Washington softball team split a series-opening doubleheader at Atlantic 10 foe St. Bonaventure on Friday afternoon at Joyce Field.
The Colonials (15-15, 4-1 A-10) started off the day with an 8-7 victory behind 11 hits and a complete-game effort by sophomore starter Sarah Costlow.
GW came out swinging in the first, as junior Megan Linn led off the game with a single and scored on a triple by sophomore Rochelle Draper to take a 1-0 lead. Senior Carlee Gray then smacked her second home run of the season to put the Colonials ahead, 3-0, before the close of the inning.
The Buff and Blue added another run in the third as Draper led off the frame with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Alana Anderson. Gray nearly had her third RBI of the game with a double, but the Bonnies gunned down the runner trying to score. Junior Paige Kovalsky got the job done with her team-best 12th double of the season to plate Gray and put the Colonials ahead by four.
St. Bonaventure responded in the bottom half of the inning with four runs to knot the game with the help of three hits and an error.
GW regained the lead in the fourth, doubling its score in the top of the stanza. Junior Monica Macchiarulo singled to start the inning and moved to third on a double by sophomore Aiyana Leal-Robles. Sophomore Morgan Rinehart knocked both runners in with a single up the middle to put the Colonials ahead, 6-4. Back-to-back defensive miscues by the Bonnies allowed another run to cross before Draper's sacrifice fly gave GW an 8-4 lead after three and a half innings of play.
St. Bonaventure rallied late with three runs in the sixth after a solo home run and a two-run home run put the Bonnies within one of the Colonials, but Costlow (9-6) worked out of the inning and shut down SBU in the seventh to grab an 8-7 win with her ninth complete game of the season.
Draper (2-for-2, 2 RBI, 1 Run), Gray (2-for-3, 2RBI, 2 Runs), Macchiarulo (2-for-3, 1 Run) and Linn (2-for-4, 2 Runs) each tallied multi-hit games for GW to open the day.
Game two featured a pitchers' duel through the first five innings, as rookie starter Jayme Cone and St. Bonaventure's Carly Bilchak held the game scoreless.
Linn's bunt single got the sixth inning started for GW and she was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Draper. A fly ball to to right off the bat of Anderson allowed Linn to tag and come within 60 feet of scoring. Gray then plated the first run of the game with an infield single to put the Colonials ahead, 1-0.
The Bonnies responded in the bottom half of the inning, as a walk, a single and a home run gave St. Bonaventure (5-18, 2-3 A-10) a 3-1 lead it would not surrender.
The series' rubber match is slated for Saturday at 12 p.m. at St. Bonaventure's Joyce Field.
