WASHINGTON - The GW softball team split a mid-week doubleheader with Virginia on Wednesday afternoon at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials (6-7) fell in a close game one, 5-4, before defeating the Cavaliers (8-15) in the nightcap, 5-2, behind a stellar pitching performance by junior Paige Kovalsky.
With Kovalsky in the circle for GW in game two, the Colonials broke a scoreless tie in the third with a long two-run home run by senior Carlee Gray - her first of the year.
A solo shot by Virginia's Madison Labshere in the fifth put the Cavaliers within one, but GW tallied a pair of insurance runs in the fifth. Junior Megan Linn led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Rochelle Draper. A two-base throwing error by the pitcher allowed Linn to score and left a runner on second. Kovalsky then smacked an RBI double down the right field line to give GW a 5-1 lead after five.
Virginia attempted to rally in the seventh, but managed just one run on two hits to give GW the win, 5-2.
Kovalsky (2-3) spun a gem in the circle for GW in game two, allowing just two runs on four hits without issuing a walk in the complete game win.
Sophomore starter Sarah Costlow threw well in the first game of the day, but a costly error in the fifth proved to be the difference maker.
Virginia scored first after a walk and a single set up a three-run home run by Lauren Heintzelmann to put the Cavaliers up, 3-0.
The Colonials got on the board with a pair of runs in the fourth that began with a single down the right field line by Kovalsky. Sophomore Alana Anderson later doubled in Kovalsky and scored on a single by classmate Aiyana Leal-Robles to put GW within one.
In Virginia's half of the fifth, with one out and a runner on second, a fly ball to right coaxed a tag up by the Cavaliers, but errant throw into third allowed the runner to score and put UVa ahead, 4-2.
GW answered in the bottom half of the inning as Linn singled and advanced to second on an error by the fright fielder. A ground out moved Linn to third and a wild pitch plated GW's third and final run of the game. The Buff and Blue were unable to score the rest of the way as Virginia took game one, 4-3.
The Colonials remain home over the weekend to host the three-day Capital Invite that will welcome Akron, Canisius and Gardner-Webb to the GW Softball Field.
