WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team continues its 10-game homestand on Wednesday afternoon when Virginia visits the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus for doubleheader action.
The Colonials (5-6) look to continue hot play at home after winning three out of four games over the weekend and 10 of their last 11 at the GW Softball Field dating back to last season.
Junior Monica Macchiarulo sits atop the Atlantic 10 with a .486 average. She leads GW with nine RBIs and is tied for a team-best five stolen bases. Classmate Paige Kovalsky leads the conference and ranks seventh in the nation in doubles per game (.55) after tallying six two-baggers through 11 games while chipping in seven RBIs. The squad's 1.82 doubles per contest ranks tops in the league and 17th in the nation.
Virginia (7-12) will visit GW after a pair of games at Towson on Tuesday afternoon. Katie Park leads the Cavaliers with a .400 average and a team-best five home runs and 24 RBIs while adding 10 runs scored. Iyana Hughes (.321) has stolen nine bases in 10 attempts in 2016 and has scored a team-high 19 runs to lead the Cavaliers on the bases.
In the circle, Erika Osherow leads Virginia with a 5-8 record on the year while striking out 48 batters and issuing just 20 walks in 72.1 innings of work.
Last season the Colonials defeated Virginia for the first time in program history in a 10-inning marathon that saw GW smack four home runs and post an eight-run 10th to come out on top, 16-9, at the Citrus Classic. Later in the year, the Buff and Blue again downed the Cavaliers, this time by a final score of 5-2.
First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
