WASHINGTON - Despite scoring 13 runs on Tuesday afternoon, the George Washington softball team fell in both ends of a doubleheader to Cornell at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
In game one, GW junior starter Paige Kovalsky was locked in a pitchers' duel until the fifth inning, when Cornell broke the scoreless tie as three hits, a walk and two errors led to four runs for the Big Red.
The Colonials responded in a big way in the fifth, taking the lead with five runs. Junior Monica Macchiarulo reached second on a two-base error to start the frame and advanced to third on another error off a ground ball by senior Morgan Matetic. A successful first-and-third play allowed Macchiaraulo to score GW's first run of the day. A sacrifice bunt, walk and fielder's choice plated another before sophomore Rochelle Draper drove in one with a single to left field. Sophomore Alana Anderson then hit a sacrifice fly to tie the score, and senior Carlee Gray put GW ahead by one with an RBI double, driving in the fifth and final run of the stanza.
The Buff and Blue added one more in the sixth after Macchiarulo led off the inning with a bunt single. A sacrifice bunt by Matetic put a runner in scoring position for freshman pinch hitter Ashley Schnarrs, who singled to center to drive in Macchiarulo and put the Colonials ahead, 6-4.
Cornell regained the lead in the seventh, after a walk and a double put the Big Red within one. A single through the right side plated another to tie the score at 6-6. Another walk ended Kovalsky's day, as freshman Ashley Pilcher came on in relief with one out and two runners on. Cornell took a 9-6 lead on a three-run home run before the side was retired.
GW attempted to rally in the seventh but plated just one run as Gray tallied her second RBI double of the game to put the final score at 9-7 in favor of Cornell.
The Big Red scored first in game two, blasting a grand slam in the first inning to take an early 4-0 lead.
GW responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning as Schnarrs reached on an error to start off the stanza. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases and Kovalsky's sacrifice fly put the Colonials on the board.
GW added another in the second, beginning with a single by sophomore Aiyana Leal-Robles and a sacrifice bunt. A single by Draper scored Leal-Robles, cutting the Colonials' deficit to 4-2.
Cornell added insurance in the third, scoring two runs on four hits, and another in the fifth with the help of two hits and a pair of walks to take a 7-2 lead.
The Colonials chipped away in the fifth, scoring two runs with the help of two errors and a triple by Macchiarulo to put the score at 7-4.
GW nearly made up the difference in the sixth, scoring two runs on a hit, two walks and an error, but the Colonials would not score again as Cornell took game two, 7-6.
Draper led the Colonials with a 3-for-5 effort at the plate with three runs scored, two RBIs and three walks. Gray (2-for-7, 3 RBIs) and Macchiarulo (3-for-5, 2 Runs, RBI) also posted multi-hit days for GW.
The Colonials (14-14, 3-0 A-10) return to action on Saturday, as GW visits St. Bonaventure for the first of three games in an Atlantic 10 series.
