WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's tennis team defeated Richmond, 5-2, for its first Atlantic 10 Conference win on Friday afternoon at the GW Tennis Center at the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials (5-7) got out to an early, 1-0, lead after grabbing the doubles point from the Spiders (7-6) to start the day. The top duo of juniors Allison Hansen and Taylor Nederlander claimed a 6-4 victory, and freshmen Victoria Kogan and Sara Grubac paired to take a 6-2 win at the No. 2 position.
Grubac kept the momemtum going in singles play, earning a hard-fought, 7-5, 7-5, triumph in second-flight action.
Richmond tied the match with wins at the Nos. 5-6 spots, but the Nederlander regainded the edge for the Colonials with a come-from-behind, 1-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3), victory at No. 3.
Sophomore Teodora Radosavljevic clinched the match, battling at the top spot for a 6-2, 6-7 (6-8), 6-4 win. Kogan closed the day with a three-set victory of her own, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, at the No. 4 position.
