WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball squad opens Atlantic 10 Conference play on Friday as La Salle visits the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus for the first of three games.
The Colonials (11-12) will host the Explorers (7-11) for a three-game set, with a single game on Friday and doubleheader action on Saturday in the opening weekend of conference play.
GW is coming off a sweep of Lafayette in a mid-week doubleheader behind strong pitching. Sophomore Sarah Costlow grabbed the win in game one, tossing five scoreless innings and allowing just three hits before classmate Ashley Pilcher threw two hitless innings of relief to preserve a 5-0 win for the Colonials. In game two, freshman Jayme Cone notched her first career victory in an eight-inning complete game effort, yielding five hits and two runs (one earned) in a thrilling 3-2 triumph.
Costlow leads the pitching staff with a 6-5 record and a team-best 2.50 ERA, logging 78.1 innings of work.
La Salle is led at the plate by Kendra Heyer's .345 average, while Michelle Hagarty has driven in a team-high eight runs. The Explorers have been quiet on the bases this spring, stealing just 11 bases compared to GW's 33 swipes.
In the circle, Mary Cate Scott owns a 5-1 record with a 4.91 ERA while pitching a team-high 34.0 innings for La Salle. Opposing hitters are batting .315 against the Explorers' staff.
GW has played well at home this season, posting a 9-3 record. La Salle is 0-5 in away games this spring.
Last season's series with La Salle was cut short due to weather, and the Explorers took the remaining two games of the set.
Friday's series opener is slated for 3 p.m., while Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 12 p.m. at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
