WASHINGTON - Junior Andrea Bolognesi is set to represent George Washington at the 2016 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by Georgia Tech at the McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta from March 23-26.
"I'm really proud of the opportunity to represent GW and the Atlantic 10, especially during my first year here, at the NCAA Championships," said Head Coach James Winchester. "For our program overall, it sends a signal of intent of where we want our program to go. George Washington is a great academic institution, we have some very strong athletics teams and the program that we're building here is definitely heading in that direction as well."
Bolognesi qualified for the Championships after posting NCAA 'B' cut times in three events at the A-10 Championships in February. The junior's conference and program record-setting time of 52.44 in the 100-yard breaststroke ranks 16th in the nation, earning him an invitation to the NCAA Championships. Bolognesi will compete in the 100-yard breast event on Friday.
Preliminaries are slated to begin at 10 a.m., with the top eight finishers advancing to the Championship final and earning First Team All-America status. Swimmers placing 9-16 will compete in the consolation final and earn Honorable Mention All-America distinction. Final heats are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN3.
"My goal is to finish in the top-16," said Bolognesi. "But honestly, I would be happy getting a faster time."
Bolognesi is the third NCAA qualifier in the history of the men's program and has a chance to be the first Colonial to score at the prestigious meet.
"We've done the training, we're resting. We'll see what we can do," said Winchester. "We're going to put in our best effort. We definitely made it into the Championships, but at the same time our goals are a little higher than that and hopefully we can hit some of those and bring some great recognition to GW and the Atlantic 10."
