BALTIMORE - George Washington gymnastics sophomore Jillian Winstanley has been named the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Gymnast of the Week and sophomore Sara Mermelstein was tabbed as the conference's Specialist of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Winstanley was recognized for her all-around performance in GW's Senior Meet victory over Kent State and Yale on Sunday. The Arlington, Massachusetts, native, who has led the EAGL in the all-around for most of the season, tallied her 19th career 39.00 or better with a 39.425 to take first place on Sunday afternoon. She posted a 9.90 on both vault and balance beam to win those event titles, while also scoring 9.775 on uneven bars (4th) and 9.85 on floor exercise (t-6th).
The award marks the third Gymnast of the Week honor of Winstanley's career, and second of this season.
Mermelstein, the reigning EAGL floor exercise co-champion, earned her first career weekly award from the conference following a standout meet on Sunday. A two-event specialist, the Northport, New York, native scored a career-high 9.90 to claim second place in the floor exercise. She added a 9.80 on balance beam to tie for fifth place.
The Colonials will aim for a second consecutive conference title when they compete at the EAGL Championship on Saturday (2:00 p.m.) at Pittsburgh's Fitzgerald Field House.
