OPENING DRAW: The GW lacrosse team makes the short 30-mile trip to Annapolis, Maryland, to face Navy on Wednesday evening.
LAST TIME OUT: GW fell to UMBC, 13-3, on Saturday. Senior Julia Lawson, junior Shea Cassidy and sophomore Amy Cunningham each recorded goals for the Colonials. Cunningham's marker was the first of her career.
HIT THE ROAD, JACK: Wednesday's game will be GW's third straight away from home. The Colonials open the season with five consecutive road contests before hosting Yale for their home opener at the GW Lacrosse Field on the Mount Vernon Campus on Saturday, March 12, at 1 p.m.
SPREADING THE WEALTH: Seven different Colonials have found the back of the net so far this season, led by Cassidy, senior Gabbi Hull and junior Bailey Forcier with two each.
HELPING HAND: Senior Olivia Boudreau is tied for 10th in the Atlantic 10 in assists per game (1.0). Last season, the team captain dished out 19 helpers, ranking sixth in the conference, and she boasts 34 assists in her career, which ranks 10th on GW's all-time list.
BETWEEN THE PIPES: Sophomore goalkeeper Adele Wise ranks third in the A-10 with 8.0 saves per game after recording a career-high 10 stops at UMBC on Saturday. GW ranks second in the A-10 in saves per game (11.0).
SCOUTING NAVY: This Mids are 4-1 this season, with their only loss coming at the hands of No. 5 Duke. Nine different players scored in Navy's 21-7 win over Liberty on Saturday, led by four goals from Julia Collins and hat tricks from Codi Mullen and Morgan Young. Collins, who was named Patriot League Midfielder of the Week on Monday for the second time this season, paces the Mids with 18 points (13g, 5a) and 19 draw controls, while Young has scored a team-high 14 goals. Ingrid Boyum has started all five games in goal for Navy and boasts an 8.86 goals-against average. As a team, Navy is averaging 13.8 goals per game, second-most in the Patriot League.
COACH COYNE ON THE MIDS: "Navy is an athletic, uptempo type of team. We expect them to come after us by pressuring all over the field. Draw controls will be key. We will work to counter the Navy center to gain key possessions and control the tempo of the game that way. The coaching staff identified five key takeaways from the UMBC game; if we improve in those areas, we will be competitive against Navy."
SERIES HISTORY: GW and Navy will meet for just the fourth time ever, with the Mids taking all three previous matchups, all since 2013. Boudreau has recorded five points (2g, 3a) in two games against Navy, while Lawson has two goals, five ground balls and two caused turnovers in three career contests.
ON TAP: The Colonials will visit Monmouth on Saturday morning. The contest was originally scheduled as GW's season opener on Feb. 13, but was postponed due to winter weather conditions.
