BALTIMORE - The George Washington women's tennis team downed Atlantic Region rival UMBC, 4-3, on Friday evening at the Retriever Tennis Complex.
Juniors Allison Hansen and Taylor Nederlander grabbed an early win, 6-2, at the top doubles spot, but UMBC (0-5) took the doubles point to start the match.
Four Colonials remained perfect in singles play this spring as the squad won all but two solo bouts to come from behind and return home with the victory.
Sophomore Teodora Radosavljevic triumphed, 6-4, 6-4, in the No. 1 position over the ITA's No. 105 ranked Maria Siopacha to tie the match at 1-1, and rookie Sara Grubac took a straight-set, 6-4, 6-2, victory in second-flight action to give GW the lead. Sophomore Marie-Louise Decamps nabbed a 6-4, 6-3 win at the No. 3 slot to complete a sweep of the top half of the ladder and put the Colonials one triumph away from clinching the day.
UMBC nearly staged a comeback, taking a three-setter at the No. 4 spot before knotting the match at 3-3 with a win at No. 5.
Hansen solidified the win for GW, coming out on top, 6-4, 6-1, at the No. 6 position.
GW improves to 2-0 on the young season and returns to the court next Friday at Towson for a 9 p.m. match.
