NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - GW men's soccer grabbed a pair of weekly Atlantic 10 awards to finish the 2016 season, the league announced on Monday. Sophomore keeper Thor Arne Höfs was named Defensive Player of the Week while senior Garrett Heine earned the Offensive Player of the Week nod for Saturday's 1-0 win over regular-season champion Saint Louis.
Heine closed his career in dramatic fashion, finding the back of the net in the 82nd minute of Saturday's season finale off of a free kick at the top of the box. The goal lifted the Colonials over the regular-season champion Billikens, 1-0, and marked the seventh score of Heine's senior year.
Höfs set a new single-season program record with his ninth clean sheet on Saturday. With one save against Saint Louis, Höfs capped a stellar season with a career-best 68 saves.
The awards mark the second weekly honor of the season for both Heine and Höfs - the first Colonials to do so since Stephen Masten garnered two A-10 Rookie of the Week nods in 1992.
