CoSIDA Academic All-America Announcement
AUSTIN, Texas - George Washington men's soccer senior Sam Summerlin has been named a CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team selection as a defender, the organization announced on Tuesday.
A two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree, Summerlin joins 32 men's soccer student-athletes receiving Academic All-America status. He is the only Atlantic 10 member to receive an Academic All-America nod this season and is just the second Colonial ever to become a CoSIDA Academic All-American. Matthew Osborne ('02) was the first, landing a first team selection in 2002.
Summerlin has been an exemplary student, achieving GW Dean's Honor List, A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll and GW Athletics Academic Dean's List status in every semester of his career. A finance and international business double-major, Summerlin owns a 3.86 GPA.
The Gaithersburg, Maryland, native closed an impressive career as a Colonial earning A-10 All-Academic honors in his final two seasons. The defender started in all but one contest for GW in 2016 and ranked third on the squad with 1,547 minutes on the pitch. Summerlin served as a critical member of the Buff and Blue's back line, helping the Colonials set a program record with nine clean sheets in 2016.
