BALTIMORE - The George Washington gymnastics team, coming off its second consecutive NCAA Regionals appearance, was picked to finish second in the 2017 East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Preseason Poll that was announced on Tuesday afternoon.
GW garnered two first place votes to slot into the second spot behind top-pick NC State. New Hampshire was picked to finish third in front of Pittsburgh, North Carolina and Towson.
The Colonials are coming off their 12th NCAA Regionals appearance in program history after setting a new postseason record with 195.55 total points at the NCAA Athens Regional at the University of Georgia.
Head coach Margie Foster-Cunningham won her second straight and fourth overall NCAA Regional Coach of the Year award and enters her 33rd season at the helm of the program in 2017.
A stellar returning class of 13 letterwinners is highlighted by 2016 EAGL Gymnast of the Year Cami Drouin-Allaire and the 2016 EAGL Vault Champion and three-time First Team All-Conference pick Jillian Winstanley.
The Colonials also return senior co-captains Chelsea Raineri and Alex DeMoura, a prolific duo that has combined for eight First Team All-EAGL nods in their careers, along with four All-Conference performers from last season in Sara Mermelstein, Liz Pfeiler, Madeline Seibold and Alex Zois.
GW opens the 2017 season against Yale at the Little Boston Invitational on January 7.
