TIPPING OFF: The George Washington women's basketball team plays its second straight home game when it hosts Coppin State at the Charles E. Smith Center on Wednesday night. Tip is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT: The Colonials delivered the first win of the Jennifer Rizzotti era in a 56-45 triumph over Princeton on Sunday at the Smith Center. Hannah Schaible and Kelli Prange each netted 11 points while a collective defensive effort limited the Tigers to 30 percent shooting from the field and forced 21 turnovers. GW's team effort was also evident on the offensive end with 15 assists on 19 made field goals.
ABOUT COPPIN STATE: Coppin State is winless through the first two games of the season after dropping contests at VCU (L, 77-43) and Virginia (L, 103-40). The Eagles went 16-16 last season with a 10-6 mark in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and fell to North Carolina A&T in the conference championship game.
SERIES HISTORY: GW is 5-0 in the all-time series against Coppin State, winning by an average margin of 28.8 points. The perfect record includes a 4-0 mark at the Smith Center coming by an average victory margin of 19 points. The teams last met in 2010, a 63-42 win for the Colonials.
BALANCED OFFENSE: Nine Colonials scored in the season opener at Georgetown as well as in Sunday's win over Princeton.
SAME OLD SCHAIBLE: Colonials fans have grown to love the playing style of Hannah Schaible through her first three seasons and the same gritty, hard-nosed player was right in the thick of the action on Sunday against Princeton. The Preseason All-Conference Third Team pick racked up a 5x4 performance with 11 points, nine rebounds, five assists and five steals. She also blocked a shot and disrupted passing lanes throughout the afternoon.
"When it comes to hustle plays, for me, they'll always come," said Schaible after Sunday's win. "I think that is big for my own mentality. I get one, and I want to get another one, another one and then another one. That is what kind of drives me through the game."
NO FRESHMAN JITTERS: Freshman Kendall Bresee has played with the poise of an upperclassmen in her first two collegiate games. She hit two free throws and grabbed two rebounds on Friday at Georgetown before making a big impact on Sunday against Princeton.
The Frederick, Maryland, native played just nine minutes against the Tigers but tallied five points, including her first career three pointer, and four rebounds. Both of her baskets came in the middle of a decisive 10-2 run that closed the third quarter and put the game out of reach for Princeton.
NEW FACE, SAME RESULT: Graduate transfer Lexi Martins has made an immediate impact on the Colonials in her first season in the Buff and Blue. She is averaging seven points and seven rebounds in the first two games. A tenacious rebounder at Lehigh for the past three seasons, Martins leads the Colonials with 14 total boards across the first two outings.
HOME COOKING: With Sunday's win over Princeton, GW has now won 26 of its last 28 games played at the Smith Center. The Colonials boast an overall record of 48-10 (.828) since the beginning of 2012-13.
LOOK AHEAD: GW will travel to Villanova for a Sunday matinee in the return game of a home-and-home series. The Colonials then head south next week to the Gulf Coast Showcase for three games in three days over Thanksgiving weekend.
