WASHINGTON - The George Washington men's soccer team wraps a three-match homestand on Wednesday afternoon in an Atlantic 10 contest with VCU at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials (5-2-4, 0-0-1 A-10) take a four-match unbeaten streak into Wednesday's match. GW opened A-10 play with a 0-0 (2OT) draw with Fordham on Saturday. The Buff and Blue have not lost at home in 2016.
Stellar defense has led GW to six clean sheets in 2016. The Colonials lead the conference and rank fifth in the nation with an .877 team save percentage and sit atop the league and rank 15th in the nation with a 0.58 goals-against average.
Sophomore Thor Arne Höfs leads the conference with an .882 save percentage and has minded the net in each of GW's clean sheets, earning A-10 Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors earlier this season.
Redshirt senior Oliver De Thier was named A-10 Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Monday after netting GW's gamewinner last Wednesday in the Colonials' 2-1 victory over St. Francis Brooklyn to close non-conference play.
Junior Christian Lawal and sophomore Dylan Lightbourn have each tallied three goals on the year to lead GW.
VCU (3-5-2, 1-0-0 A-10) opened A-10 play with a 2--0 victory over George Mason at home on Saturday and has played a challenging non-conference schedule this season. The Rams own a 1-3-1 record against ranked opponents in 2016, defeating then-No. 23 Vermont, 2-1, and playing to a 0-0 (2OT) draw with then-No. 23 Akron.
During the 2015 regular season, the Colonials took a 1-0 overtime victory over the Rams by virtue of an own goal. GW looks to avenge a 4-0 defeat by VCU in the A-10 Championship quarterfinals.
