The Colonials (7-4-5, 2-2-2 A-10) are tied with Massachusetts (5-7-3, 2-1-2 A-10) for eighth place in the league standings entering the week. Both teams are vying for a spot at the Atlantic 10 Championship as the top eight squads in the conference are invited to the postseason tournament.
With just two matches left to play, the Buff and Blue are looking to bounce back form a 1-0 loss at St. Bonaventure on Oct. 19.
Senior Garrett Heine leads the Colonials with 17 points (6g, 5a) on the season, scoring all but one goal against league opponents.
GW owns the top defense in the A-10, leading the league with a 0.64 goals-against average, allowing just 11 goals on the season. As a squad, the Colonials lead the A-10 and rank fourth in the nation with a 0.861 save percentage entering the week.
Sophomore Thor Arne Höfs has been a force between the posts, sitting atop the A-10 and ranking sixth in the nation with a 0.863 save percentage. Höfs' eight clean sheets on the year match a program record for single-season shutouts.
Massachusetts has three matches remaining in the regular season and hosts GW after a 1-0 overtime victory over VCU on Saturday. Ten different Minutemen have found the back of the net in 2016, but the squad has been outscored, 22-15, on the year. UMass has yielded 15 goals to opponents in the second half of games.
Last season the Colonials downed UMass, 2-0, at home on goals from Heine and then-sophomore Oliver Curry.
