WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's soccer squad continues Atlantic 10 play with a pair of home matches at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus. The Colonials will host VCU on Thursday before Richmond visits the District on Sunday.
The weekend's matches are part of GW's Spirit Week and Sunday's contest wraps Alumni Weekend for GW's soccer programs.
The Buff and Blue (8-4-1, 2-1-1 A-10) look to extend a three-match unbeaten streak in league play. The Colonials most recently downed Massachusetts on the road, 2-0, on Sunday.
GW enters the week tied for first in the league with just 10 goals allowed on the year. The squad's 0.76 goals-against average ranks third in the A-10, and the Colonials are tied for a league-best with six clean sheets on the year.
Redshirt junior keeper Miranda Horn leads the A-10 with a 0.63 goals-against average and an .873 save percentage.
Offensively, senior MacKenzie Cowley continues to lead GW with nine goals - good for second in the A-10 - and has scored in three of GW's four A-10 matches in 2016. Classmate Lina Proska has stepped up in conference play, tallying five points - her first of the season - on two goals and one assist against A-10 foes. Both of Proska's goals have been game-winners.
VCU (6-6-1, 2-2-0 A-10) comes off a 1-0 victory at Dayton on Sunday. VCU's 19 goals in 2016 have come from 10 different Rams, but only four goals have come in conference play.
Richmond (7-5-1, 2-2-0 A-10) visits Saint Joseph's on Thursday before taking on the Colonials. Reigning A-10 Rookie of the Week Brooke Beam has put together a strong freshman season, scoring her first career game-winner and second goal of the season on Sunday as the Spiders downed Rhode Island, 2-1.
Richmond's Lexi Prullaman leads the league offensively with 23 points this season (10g, 3a) and averages a conference-high 5.31 shots per contest.
A year ago the Colonials downed VCU, 2-0, and triumphed over Richmond, 1-0.
A part of GW men's and women's soccer Alumni Weekend, Sunday's match will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the 1996 women's team's NCAA berth - the first in program history. Members of the 1996 team will be recognized at halftime.
