WASHINGTON - The George Washington men's soccer squad visits Atlantic 10 foe George Mason on Wednesday evening for the first Revolutionary Rivalry matchup of the 2016-17 season. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at George Mason Stadium.
The Colonials (5-3-5, 0-1-2 A-10) enter the week after three consecutive overtime matches, resulting in two draws and a loss in A-10 play.
GW continues to own one of the top defenses in the conference, ranking second in the league with a 0.70 goals-against average, yielding just 10 goals on the season. Mason ranks 11th with a 1.76 GAA, allowing 18 goals in 2016.
The Colonials have looked to sophomore keeper Thor Arne Höfs to lead the defense, and Höfs has proven to be one of the top netminders in the country, ranking eighth nationally with a 0.857 save percentage which leads the A-10.
As a squad, GW has posted six clean sheets on the season - good for second in the league.
Offensively, sophomore Dylan Lightbourn has posted a breakout season, leading GW with four goals to tie for second in the conference. Senior Garrett Heine has also been in on the action, racking up four assists to lead the Colonials and rank tied for second in the A-10 while adding two goals of his own.
Mason (2-7-1, 0-2-0 A-10) has been out-shot 150-96 in 2016 and has allowed twice as many goals (18) as the Patriots have scored (9) this year. Mason's defense has yielded a .460 shot-on-goal percentage this season.
The Patriots have struggled to create offensive opportunities as opponents hold a 70-36 advantage in corner kicks this fall.
A year ago, the Colonials downed Mason on Heine's first half goal, 1-0.
The first point in the year-long Revolutionary Rivalry is up for grabs on Wednesday evening. GW took a 15.5-3.5 victory over George Mason in 2015-16's competition.
