WASHINGTON - The George Washington gymnastics team will face seven postseason teams from last year, including hosting 2016 NCAA Gymnastics National Championship participant Stanford at the Charles E. Smith Center, as part of its 2017 competition schedule, head coach Margie Foster-Cunningham has announced.
GW, coming off its second consecutive NCAA Regionals performance and best postseason score in program history in 2016, opens the 2017 campaign by returning to the Little Boston Invitational on January 7. The Colonials are opening the season on the road for just the third time since 2005 and will face off against Yale at the John B. Hynes Veterans Memorial Convention Center in Boston, Massachusetts.
The Colonials open the home portion of their schedule with the 10th Annual Lindsey Ferris Invitational on January 14 against East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) rival North Carolina, along with Cornell and Penn.
GW will spend the next three weekends on the road, first with a visit to EAGL rival Towson on January 22.
The following weekend, the Colonials will compete at the prestigious Metro Plex in Fort Worth, Texas, on January 28. The meet is contested on podium, an elevated competition floor as seen at the NCAA Gymnastics National Championship, and will feature the Colonials clashing with 2016 NCAA Regional qualifiers Central Michigan and Bowling Green, along with San Jose State.
GW returns home to the Smith Center for the annual Brownie & Girl Scout Meet on February 5 against EAGL foe New Hampshire and Ball State.
The Colonials will visit NCAA Regional participant Missouri on February 10 for a quad meet that will also feature Iowa State and Lindenwood University.
GW returns home to the Smith Center on February 17 for the annual Pink Meet. The meet will feature the Colonials, EAGL rival Pittsburgh, NCAA Regional qualifier Iowa, Maryland and William & Mary.
The Buff and Blue commence a string of three straight road meets on February 19 with a visit to NCAA Gymnastics National Championship Runner Up LSU. The Tigers have finished second overall in two of the past three NCAA Championships and have appeared in the Super Six (NCAA Championship Meet) in three of the past four seasons. The tri-meet will also feature Iowa.
The Colonials will visit EAGL rival NC State for a tri-meet with the Wolfpack and William & Mary on February 25 before wrapping their road schedule on March 5 at West Virginia for a quad meet with the host Mountaineers, Pittsburgh and Eastern Michigan.
GW concludes the regular season with Senior Day on March 12 at the Smith Center. The Colonials will welcome Stanford, participants in the NCAA Championship Semifinals in 2016, for the first time in program history along with NC State and Yale.
The 2017 EAGL Championship will be held on March 18 at NC State's Reynolds Coliseum.
