DAVIDSON, N.C. - The George Washington men's swimming and diving team wrapped a two-day season-opening meet with Queens and Davidson on Saturday at Davidson's Charles A. Cannon Pool.
The Colonials fell to Davidson, 190-150, and to two-time defending Division II champion Queens, 222-92.
"This weekend will definitely be a good learning experience for our program, and our men will have to rebound from a tough loss," said second-year head coach James Winchester. "The early season competitions give us the opportunity to assess our weaknesses and put us in a stronger position for success down the road."
Senior Ben Fitch led the Buff and Blue on Saturday with his first-place performance in the 100 butterfly, touching the wall in 51.82. Fitch also helped the Colonials to a pair of second-place relay performances. In the 200 medley relay, Junior Gustav Hokfelt, senior Andrea Bolognesi, Fitch and sophomore Alexander Auster posted a time of 1:34.62 to take a second-place finish. Later, freshman Max Forstenhaeusler, Auster, Fitch and Hokfelt touched the wall in 3:09.66 in the 400 freestyle relay to take second.
Hokfelt and Forstenhaeusler also tallied runner-up finishes individually with strong performances in the 200 backstroke (1:55.29) and 100 free (47.70), respectively.
Freshman Alex Cronin wrapped GW's top performances on Saturday with his third-place finish in the 500 free with a time of 4:46.21.
The Colonials return to the pool on Saturday, Oct. 8, in the squad's home opener against Rider at the Charles E. Smith Center.
