THIS WEEKEND: The George Washington gymnastics returns to action after canceling last weekend's road trip to Pittsburgh due to the blizzard that crippled the east coast. The Colonials will visit East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) rival North Carolina on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT: GW totaled 13 podium appearances, including a sweep of the all-around, en route to its fourth consecutive Lindsey Ferris Invitational title on January 17 at the Charles E. Smith Center.
Sophomores Cami Drouin-Allaire (39.30) and Jillian Winstanley (39.225) and junior Alex DeMoura (38.95) topped the all-around field, while Drouin-Allaire (co-champion on floor exercise), DeMoura (co-champion on balance beam), sophomore Liz Pfeiler (co-champion on balance beam) and junior Chelsea Raineri (co-champion on floor exercise) also earned event titles.
HOT START: GW is 6-0 to open the 2016 season. The 2015 squad started the campaign with an 11-0 record, which was the best in program history.
NATIONAL RANKINGS: GW is currently ranked No. 11 in the nation in terms of overall team score with an average mark of 195.80. The Colonials also hold team rankings of 10th on floor exercise (49.088 average), 10th on balance beam (48.963), 8th on uneven bars (49.138) and are tied for 31st on vault (48.613).
FLY LIKE AN EAGL: GW boasts a number of gymnasts holding top-five event rankings within the East Atlantic Gymnastics League. Winstanley currently paces the conference on both the vault (9.875 average) and uneven bars (9.887) while ranking second in the all-around (39.287). Drouin-Allaire is the conference's top all-around performer with an average of 39.300.
The Colonials also boast four of the top five uneven bars performers in the conference in Winstanley (1st, 9.887), Drouin-Allaire (2nd, 9.838), sophomore Liz Pfeiler (4th, 9.825) and junior Chelsea Raineri (5th, 9.800). Additionally, Raineri ranks fourth on the floor exercise (9.85) and sophomore Sara Mermelstein is tied for fifth (9.813). Also, junior Alex DeMoura is tied for fourth in the all-around (39.050).
THE ROAD AHEAD: Saturday's meet is the first of three consecutive road competitions for the Colonials. Next weekend, the Colonials will travel to Kent, Ohio, for a tri-meet against the host Golden Flashes and Northern Illinois. The road trip will conclude on Feb. 12 at the prestigious Perfect 10 Challenge in Oklahoma City, against Oklahoma, Denver and Utah State.
