WASHINGTON -- The George Washington women's basketball team returns to the court for its second game in three days, hosting Revolutionary Rival and Atlantic 10 foe George Mason for a Friday matinee. Tipoff from the Charles E. Smith Center is slated for noon.
Originally scheduled to be played on Saturday, the game was moved to Friday due to the impending snow storm in the forecast for the Mid-Atlantic region this weekend. All fans who bring a canned food item for the D.C. Food Bank will receive free admission to the Smith Center. Fans who previously purchased tickets to Saturday's contest can redeem them for a GW women's basketball game of their choice. Saturday's planned activities for National Girls and Women in Sports Day, including the pregame screening of All-American Girls and the post-game youth clinic, have been postponed until a later date.
An important point in the Revolutionary Rivalry standings is on the line in Friday's contest. Following fall competition, GW holds a 5-1 lead over George Mason in the year-long competition between the teams that culminates in the awarding of the Tri-Corner Hat Trophy.
GW leads the all-time series against George Mason, 16-8, with five straight wins over the last three years. The teams, separated by just 20 miles, have played twice a year since the Patriots joined the Atlantic 10 in the 2013-14 season. The Colonials routed the Patriots twice a year ago, including an 87-52 road win and an 80-45 victory at home on Senior Day. Caira Washington (15.0 ppg), Jonquel Jones (13.5 ppg) and Hannah Schaible (13.0 ppg) all averaged double figures for GW in those two contests.
GW won its 11th straight game on Wednesday evening, downing Massachusetts, 67-50. Schaible matched her career high with 18 points, while Washington neared a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds. The 11-game winning streak is tied for the seventh-longest active streak in Division I.
At 16-3, GW has equaled the second-best record through 19 games in program history (two teams went 17-2). The Colonials are one of two Atlantic 10 teams which remain unbeaten in conference play at 6-0, along with St. Bonaventure.
GW's defense has not allowed more than 61 points since Dec. 20. In the eight games since that contest, GW has held opponents to 53.4 points on 31.7 percent shooting, including 21.3 percent from deep. The Colonials lead the A-10 in field goal percentage defense (.313) and 3-point percentage defense (.208) in league games. GW also continues to lead the nation in rebounding (51.2 rpg) and has out rebounded all 19 of its opponents this season.
George Mason (8-11, 3-3 A-10) is coming off a 70-54 win over VCU on Wednesday evening. Taylor Brown scored a game-high 21 points to pace the Patriots, who snapped a brief two-game skid. Brown ranks fifth in the A-10 with 15.2 points per game this season, pacing three Patriots who are averaging double figures in scoring. George Mason is averaging 65.8 points per game as a team but allows a league-high 69.6 points per contest.
