WASHINGTON -- Coming off a thrilling 62-61 come-from-behind victory at Dayton on Sunday, the George Washington women's basketball team returns to the Charles E. Smith Center on Wednesday evening to host Atlantic 10 rival La Salle. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
GW (13-3, 3-0 A-10) rallied from a 15-point third-quarter deficit to claim its fourth straight victory over the Flyers and second in a row at UD Arena, as the Colonials are the only A-10 team to win in Dayton since 2012. Senior Jonquel Jones, who was named both A-10 and National Player of the Week, registered her 13th double-double of the season with 23 points and 15 rebounds, while junior Caira Washington scored 17 points.
The Colonials enter Wednesday's contest riding an eight-game winning streak dating to Dec. 6, their fourth streak of eight or more straight victories in the last three seasons, and GW is 3-0 in A-10 play for the third year in a row. The Colonials have won 11 straight games against A-10 opponents since Feb. 15, 2015, tied for the seventh-longest active conference winning streak in the nation.
A national player of the year candidate, Jones continues to lead the nation in rebounding (15.2 rpg) and is tied for tops in the NCAA with 13 double-doubles while ranking second in the A-10 in scoring (17.3 ppg).
Washington joined Jones in GW's 1,000-point club on Sunday. They are the first pair of Colonial teammates with 1,000 points apiece since Danni Jackson and Megan Nipe in 2013-14. Washington ranks 11th and fifth in the A-10 in scoring (14.1 ppg) and rebounding (8.5 rpg), respectively, as she and Jones form the highest-scoring (31.4 ppg) and highest-rebounding (23.7 rpg) tandem in the league.
Paced by their starting front court, GW leads the nation in rebounding (52.1 rpg) and is tied for the national lead in rebounding margin (+18.1 rpg). The Colonials have won the battle of the boards in all 16 games this season and in 46-of-48 since the start of the 2014-15 campaign.
GW has won 32-of-37 all-time meetings against La Salle, including 14-of-16 at the Smith Center. The Explorers took the first game in the series in 1981, but the Colonials won the next 24 in a row before La Salle earned its next victory in 2005. GW picked up a 67-48 win at La Salle last season. Jones notched a double-double with 12 points and 16 rebounds, while Kelli Prange tallied 11 points, eight rebounds and three blocks off the bench. Michaya Owens paced the Explorers with 12 points and five steals.
La Salle (3-12, 0-3 A-10) has dropped three in a row following a 79-70 loss at George Mason on Sunday. Amy Griffin, the leading scorer in the Atlantic 10 with 17.8 points per game, posted a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds, while Ashanti Freeland scored 14 points and Jasmine Alston stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and four steals. Alston, an A-10 Preseason All-Defensive Team selection, leads the league in steals (2.5 spg) and ranks third in assists (5.7 apg). As a team, La Salle ranks 13th in the conference in scoring (55.9 ppg) and scoring defense (67.3 ppg) and has been outscored by a league-high 11.4 points per contest.
