WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team has released its 2016 slate, sixth-year head coach Stacey Schramm announced.
The Colonials open the 2016 season on the road for a trio of tournaments. GW will first visit Boiling Springs, North Carolina, for a Gardner-Webb hosted tournament from Feb. 12-14 at the newly renovated Brinkley Softball Stadium. The Buff and Blue will then travel west to Palm Springs, California, for the Mary Nutter Classic from Feb. 19-21, before visiting Norfolk State from Feb. 26-28, to conclude the season-opening road stint.
GW will open its home season on the newly renovated GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus as the Buff and Blue co-host the Colonial Classic with Georgetown from March 4-6. Stony Brook, Robert Morris and Monmouth will visit the District for the three-day tournament.
The Colonials then host Virginia for a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 9. GW defeated the Cavaliers twice in 2015, recording the program's first-ever victories over Virginia.
GW remains at home from March 11-13 to host the Capital Invite as Akron, Canisius and Gardner-Webb come to the GW Softball Field before the Colonials travel to UNC-Greensboro from Feb. 18-20.
Lafayette visits the District for a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 23, to begin a six-game homestand as the Colonials open Atlantic 10 Conference play on Friday, March 25, with a single game against La Salle. The Buff and Blue host the remainder of the three-game conference set on March 26 with a doubleheader before UMBC visits the GW Softball Field for a mid-week match-up on Tuesday, March 29, for a single game to wrap the month of play.
The Colonials continue A-10 competition, April 2-3, at St. Bonaventure for a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday.
GW returns home to face Coppin State on Wednesday, April 6, before hosting reigning three-time A-10 Champion and NCAA Regional participant Fordham for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 9, with the series conclusion on Sunday, April 10.
The Buff and Blue visit Revolutionary Rival George Mason for a mid-week A-10 doubleheader on Wednesday, April 13, before traveling to Rhode Island for a series with the Rams from April 16-17.
The Colonials head to Georgetown on Wednesday, April 20, in the final non-conference game of the season ahead of another six-game homestand as Massachusetts (April 23-24) and St. Joseph's (April 30-May 1) visit the GW Softball Field on back-to-back weekends.
GW will conclude the regular season on the road at Saint Louis with a doubleheader on Saturday, May 7, followed by a single game on Sunday, May 8.
The Colonials will host the Atlantic 10 Championship for the first time in 2016, as the top six squads in the conference will play in a double-elimination tournament from May 11-14 at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
