Jordan Roland carries some serious basketball credentials into his freshman season at George Washington. A two-time New York State Class B Player of the Year, he helped Westhill High School to two consecutive state championships. He averaged 20+ points per game in his final three years of high school and looks to carry that success to Foggy Bottom heading into the 2015-16 season.
GWsports.com caught up with Jordan a few weeks ago to gauge his thoughts on his first month on campus, the biggest adjustments he anticipates and living away from home for the first time.
GWsports.com: What are your first impressions of being a GW student-athlete?
Jordan Roland: It is going to be a lot of fun and we definitely have the potential to be very good this year. In getting to know all of the guys, we have a great group here on the team and we are building our chemistry so that we can be at our best once the season gets started.
GWsports.com: What has been the biggest adjustment going from high school to college basketball?
JR: I think the amount of stuff you have to do is a big difference...class, practices, workouts, study hall and meetings. The days are really packed in and are longer. So that has taken some getting used to in these first few weeks.
GWsports.com: How would your rate your play so far in the Kenner League and do you feel comfortable out there at the collegiate pace?
JR: I think I have played pretty well in Kenner so far. I have shot the ball pretty well but I think it is pretty obvious that a lot of people are just focusing on themselves, but with the opportunities that I have had, I think I have played well.
GWsports.com: What classes are you taking this summer and what is something interesting that you have learned?
JR: I am taking a speech class called voice and diction. I am also taking a history course, but the voice and diction class has been really interesting. I have a tendency to talk really fast so it has been helping me learn to address that and work through that habit.
GWsports.com: What is it like living away from home for the first time?
JR: It is tough especially because all of my friends are back at home and haven't left for school yet, so it is still an adjustment. I have missed it but I also like being on my own and being independent.
GWsports.com: What is your favorite part about living in Washington, DC?
JR: All of the monuments being within walking distance is definitely one of my favorite parts about this campus. Being able to run down to the National Mall for a workout in front of the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial at any time of day is a really cool experience. The scenery is amazing.
GWsports.com: What are you most looking forward to once the fall practices get started?
JR: Just to get started with practice and having the full team here together to work hard as we head into the season. As I said earlier, we have the potential to be really good this year so we are all pumped to get rolling.
GWsports.com: What are your individual goals for your freshman season?
JR: I just want to be able to help out the team any way I can. Whether that means scoring or defensively, I just want to contribute and be effective while making an impact.
GWsports.com: Who is your funniest teammate?
JR: Probably Matt Cimino. He is just really funny and he is always cracking jokes.
