WASHINGTON -- The George Washington men's soccer team will celebrate its 50th anniversary of varsity competition during the 2015 campaign.
GW will face the program's first-ever opponent, Loyola Maryland, on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 3 p.m. for the first time in seven years, and all men's soccer alumni are invited to a reception to celebrate the team's 50th anniversary on Saturday, Sept. 26, as part of the university's Alumni Weekend festivities. Further details on the event will be forthcoming.
The Colonials, who began competing as a varsity program in 1965, have posted 365 victories over the last half century with seven conference championships and six NCAA Tournament appearances. GW won back-to-back Southern Conference titles in 1968 and 1969 as well as a Capital Collegiate Conference regular-season crown in 1977 before moving to the Atlantic 10 in 1987. Since then, the Colonials have won a pair of A-10 regular-season titles in 1992 and 2011 as well as two tournament championships in 2002 and 2004.
