WASHINGTON -- The George Washington men's soccer team kicked off 2015 preseason training this week at the GW Soccer Field.
With the sun shining over the Mount Vernon Campus, the Colonials returned to the pitch on Wednesday for their fourth season under Head Coach Craig Jones. After physical testing in the morning session, the squad concluded the afternoon workout with the annual Buff and Blue scrimmage.
"It's good to see the guys back," said Coach Jones. "Everybody's excited to be back. The nervous energy of some of our underclassmen, just tried to get some of that out in our 11v11 game. [Thursday] was getting back to some more technical stuff ... trying to build how we want to play for the season coming up."
"Everyone came back pretty fit," added junior Sam Summerlin, the reigning team MVP. "The intensity's high, it's good. Everyone's going to work hard this year, and I think everyone's buying into the all-in mentality, which is going to help us get some wins this year. Everyone's in it to win it. It's going to be a big year."
GW returns 19 letterwinners and nine starters from last season's team while welcoming seven newcomers to the roster.
The Colonials will play a pair of exhibition games in August, beginning next Friday, Aug. 21, at 4 p.m. against Catholic. GW will also visit James Madison on Sunday, Aug. 23, before opening the regular season on Friday, Aug. 28, against District rival American at the annual Kukenstrong D.C. College Cup hosted by George Mason.
