GW Women's Rowing Places Seventh at A-10 Championship

PENNSAUKEN, N.J. - The George Washington women's rowing team sent two boats to the Grand Finals and won the Varsity 8 Petite Final en route to a seventh-place finish at the 2015 Atlantic 10 Championship on Saturday on the Cooper River.
Massachusetts won the Atlantic 10 Championship and the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship with 53 points. Rhode Island finished in second place with 47 points followed by Saint Joseph's (38 points), Duquesne (34), Dayton (26), George Mason (26), GW (25), Fordham (13) and La Salle (6).
Races were conducted in conditions of flat water with a slight headwind.
In the morning heat, the Varsity 4 finished in second place with a time of 8:09.70. Rhode Island won the heat in 7:48.29 with Dayton (8:33.29) and Fordham (8:45.04) finishing in third and fourth place, respectively.
The JV8 also took second place in its morning heat, navigating the 2,000-meter course in 7:08.43, to clinch a spot in the Grand Final. UMass won the heat in 7:01.69 with Duquesne (7:12.13) in third and Dayton (7:50.53) in fourth.
The Varsity 8 finished in fourth place in a competitive heat with a time 7:05.48. Rhode Island (6:53.44), Duquesne (6:57.91) and George Mason (7:02.09) all advanced to the Grand Final out of the heat.
In the Varsity 4 Grand Final, the Colonials finished in 7:49.22 for fourth place and six points. Rhode Island won the gold medal in 7:31.10, Massachusetts won silver in 7:36.50 and Saint Joseph's won bronze in 7:45.30. Duquesne finished in fifth place in 8:12.75 and Dayton finished in sixth place in 8:36.88.
GW's JV8 finished in fifth place in the Grand Final to clinch 10 points towards the team total. The Colonials navigated the 2,000-meter course in 7:14.21. Massachusetts won in 6:55.88 followed by Saint Joseph's (7:02.05), Rhode Island (7:04.47) and George Mason (7:07.76). Duquesne finished in sixth in 7:19.13.
GW won the Varsity 8 Petite Final with a time of 7:07.16, ahead of Fordham (7:10.10) and La Salle (7:52.86).
GW's 3rd Varsity 8 won the bronze medal in the Grand Final after finishing with a time of 7:15.53. Rhode Island won gold in 7:10.45 with Duquesne taking second in 7:13.01. Saint Joseph's took fourth in 7:16.53.
Senior Amanda Young was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team at the conclusion of the event.
