UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. - GW golf improved its team score in each of the three rounds of Seattle U's Redhawk Invitational at Chambers Bay Golf Club, site of this spring's 2015 U.S. Open Championship.
After opening with a 34-over-par 314 in Monday's opening round, GW posted team totals of 312 and 308 over the final two rounds to finish in 15th place in the 18-team field at 94-over 934.
The Colonials saved their best play for the toughest day, recording their 28-over 308 during Tuesday's final round when the average individual score was 78.24 on the par-70, 7,303-yard Chambers Bay layout.
Junior Steve Piela led the way for GW in the final round and for the tournament, closing with a 6-over 76 to improve 16 spots into a tie for 42nd place in the 92-player field at 22-over 232 (76-80-76).
Freshman Vince Palazzolo opened with rounds of 76 and 75 before settling one shot behind Piela at 23-over 233 (76-75-82) and tied for 47th.
Junior Michael Helton tied for 57th at 25-over 235 (81-76-78), senior Jack Persons tied for 70th at 28-over 238 (81-81-76), and sophomore Michael Heda tied for 77th at 30-over 240 (81-81-78).
No. 18 Washington led throughout the 54-hole tournament and claimed the team title at 14-over 854 (279-280-295), 24 shots clear of runner-up and host Seattle U. The Huskies' Frank Garber earned medalist honors at 2-over 212 (70-66-76), one shot ahead of teammate Corey Pereira.
GW completes its regular season on April 18-19 at Penn State's Rutherford Intercollegiate in State College, Pennsylvania, before heading to the 2015 Atlantic 10 Championship in Harmony, Florida, from April 24-26.
