WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's rowing team swept Atlantic 10 rival Dayton in three races on Saturday afternoon and totaled 77 points to finish in third place in the Howard W. Wilkins Bowl standings at the 27th George Washington Invitational on the Potomac River.
Navy won the Wilkins Bowl (108 points) and the Gilbert H. Hood Trophy, which is awarded to the top program at the two-day event. Saint Joseph's finished in second place in the Wilkins Bowl standings with 96 points, followed by GW (72), Dayton (24), Georgetown (24) and MIT (0).
The afternoon session featured a 15-20 mph tailwind.
GW raced two boats in the Varsity B4 with both crews finishing ahead of Dayton. The Colonials' C4 finished in 7:42.50 while the B4 registered a time of 7:46.50. Dayton followed in 8:19.70.
The Varsity 4 rowed to an open-water victory over the Flyers with a time of 7:33.60 to clinch nine points towards GW's team total. Dayton finished in 8:10.10.
The 2nd Varsity 8 added another open-water win after navigating the 2,000-meter course in 6:46.20 to bank 12 points in the Wilkins Bowl standings. Dayton trailed in 7:05.20.
The Varsity 8 made it a clean sweep with a time of 6:32.80 for 15 points. Dayton finished in 6:39.40.
The morning session was breezy with the occasional gust as the Colonials fell in a trio of races to Navy.
GW will resume its springs schedule next Saturday when it faces Delaware and North Carolina in Woodbridge, Virginia.
