WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team pounded out 10 runs in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader with Atlantic 10 foe Saint Louis to split the day's action. The Colonials look to win the series in Sunday's rubber game at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
GW (19-17, 3-8 A-10) fell in game one, 5-1, as the Billikens (25-13, 9-4 A-10) outhit the Colonials, 9-3, in the series opener.
SLU scored the first run of the day in the opening frame with the help of a GW miscue, but the Colonials knotted the score at 1-1 in their half of the first when sophomore Megan Linn doubled, advanced to third on an error and scored on a passed ball.
In the third, a walk, single and a stolen base put a pair of runners in scoring position for the Billikens. A double from Allie Macfarlane plated both base runners to give SLU a 3-1 advantage after three.
Saint Louis would score twice more - once in the fifth on a solo home run by Brianna Lore and once in the sixth on three hits - and ultimately won the opener, 5-1.
Linn notched two of the Colonials' three hits in game one, while sophomore Monica Macchiarulo added a pinch-hit double.
In game two, the Buff and Blue struck first, posting a five spot in the first inning on five hits and two walks.
Sophomore Bradleigh Breland began the rally with a one-out single, followed by a walk to senior Victoria Valos. The speedy Breland then swiped third and scored on a double by junior Carlee Gray. Macchiarulo, the designated player in game two, dropped a smooth bunt single to score Valos and was moved to second on an RBI single by senior Samantha Dos Santos. Sophomore Paige Kovalsky walked to load the bases for freshman Rochelle Draper, who plated two with a single to right before the inning ended.
The Colonials tacked on two more in the second, as Breland led off the inning with a triple and scored on a wild pitch. Gray singled and scored on another triple, this time by Macchiarulo.
The Billikens broke the shutout in the third with a walk and two singles to score their only run of the ballgame.
GW's trio of runs in the fourth on one hit and three errors proved enough to enact the mercy rule, giving the Colonials a 10-1 victory in five innings in the nightcap.
Macchiarulo posted two hits in game two, finishing the day with a team-best 3-for-4 effort with three RBIs and two runs scored. Breland, Gray and Dos Santos each recorded a pair of hits in game two, while Draper rounded out the nine GW hits.
Kovalsky tallied her sixth complete game of the season and improved her record to 8-1 while striking out seven and allowing just two hits in five innings of work.
The Colonials look to win the series on Sunday, as Saint Louis once again visits the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus for a single game at 12 p.m. GW's head women's basketball coach, Jonathan Tsipis, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to the game.
