WASHINGTON - The George Washington gymnastics team, fresh off the program's first-ever East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) championship, will compete at the NCAA Auburn Regional on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET at Auburn Arena in Auburn, Alabama. The meet will be broadcast on ESPN3 and WatchESPN.
GW (22-3-1) is making its 11th appearance at NCAA Regionals and first since the 2002 season.
The sixth-seeded Colonials will be competing against nationally ranked No. 5 Alabama (#1 seed), No. 8 Auburn (#2), No. 17 Minnesota (#3), Iowa (#4) and Maryland (#5).
GW is enjoying its finest season in program history in 2015 after winning its first-ever EAGL Championship on March 23 at SECU Arena in Towson, Maryland.
The Colonials started the season with an 11-0 record en route to 17 regular-season victories. As a team, GW has set three new program records this season for overall team score (196.875), vault (49.50) and floor exercise (49.45).
GW has also had a number of individuals achieve program firsts during the 2015 season. Most recently, freshman Cami Drouin-Allaire became the program's first-ever All-American when she earned Second Team vault honors from the National Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches Association on March 27.
GW boasted a major EAGL award winner for the second straight season as Jillian Winstanley was named the Rookie of the Year at the conclusion of the EAGL Championship.
The duo of Winstanley and Drouin-Allaire also became the first gymnasts in program history to earn individual event titles at the EAGL Championship. Winstanley won the uneven bars title with a score of 9.875 while Drouin-Allaire earned the vault championship by scoring 9.95. Additionally, freshman Sara Mermelstein earned a share of the floor exercise championship with a score of 9.85.
The Colonials boast the third-best vault lineup among the six regional competitors at Saturday's meet, and No. 10 overall lineup in the nation on the apparatus with a regional-qualifying score (RQS) of 49.315.
Drouin-Allaire is ranked No. 9 in the nation as an individual vault performer with a 9.93 RQS. A First Team All-EAGL performer on vault, floor exercise and all-around, Drouin-Allaire averages 9.89 per vault routine and has scored a school-record tying 9.95 on three occasions this season. The Shoreham, New York, native is also a three-time EAGL Rookie of the Week selection in 2015 and was named the conference's Gymnast of the Week once.
In addition to being named the EAGL's top rookie, Winstanley is also a First Team All-EAGL selection on vault, uneven bars, balance beam and all-around. Her all-around score of 39.55 on March 15 ties her with GW Athletics Hall of Famer Devin McCalla for the second-highest all-around total in program history.
Sophomore Chelsea Raineri, the 2014 EAGL Rookie of the Year, earned First Team All-EAGL honors on both vault and floor exercise and was a three-time EAGL Specialist of the Week selection in 2015. She concluded the season ranked first overall in the EAGL on floor exercise and fourth overall on vault. The Telford, Pennsylvania, native has performed five routines on vault that have scored 9.90 or better.
The top two teams and top two all-around competitors (who are not on an advancing team) from each of the six NCAA Regional sites will advance to the NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championships, April 17-19, at the Fort Worth Convention Center Arena in Forth Worth, Texas.
Additionally, the event winners at each regional will advance to the national championship (in that event only) if they are not part of a qualifying team or all-around.
