WASHINGTON - Despite scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh, the George Washington softball team was defeated, 12-8, by Dartmouth on Tuesday afternoon at the GW Softball Field at the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials (13-11, 0-2 A-10) claimed the lead on two occasions, but got into trouble late in the game, allowing the Big Green (6-11) to take away the victory.
Dartmouth struck first, scoring one run in the opening frame after a lead-off double was plated by a RBI single to jump out to an early 1-0 lead.
GW answered back in the second after sophomore Megan Linn reached base on a walk and stole her team-leading 16th base of the season. Classmate Bradleigh Breland followed with an infield single and swiped a bag of her own to put a pair of runners in scoring position for senior Victoria Valos. Valos singled off the pitcher's feet to plate the first run of the game for the Colonials. Junior Carlee Gray drove in a run with her own single off the starter's legs for the second and final run of the inning.
The Big Green knotted the score at two apiece with a solo home run by Morgan McCalmon, but would do no more damage in the second.
The Buff and Blue reclaimed the lead in the third with a round-tripper of its own, courtesy of a Valos solo blast to center field, her third of the season.
Dartmouth again tied the score in the fourth, again on a McCalmon home run.
The visitors took the lead in the fifth after a hit batter and two walks loaded the bases for the Big Green with one out. A 2-RBI single up the middle tilted the score in Dartmouth's favor, 5-3, but not for long.
In GW's half of the stanza, sophomore pinch hitter Monica Macchiarulo reached base on a catcher's interference to lead off the inning. Freshman pinch hitter Alana Anderson grounded out to move the runner into scoring position for Linn, who smashed the fourth home run of the game, her second of the year, with a two-run shot to left center to again knot the game, this time at 5-5.
The Ivy League foe busted the game open in the sixth, as a hit batter, walk and intentional walk led to a two-run double down the left field line to plate two and keep a pair of runners in scoring position. With sophomore Paige Kovalsky entering the circle in relief of freshman starter Sarah Costlow, Dartmouth again loaded the bases with a walk. A two-run single marked the end of the damage for the inning, with the Big Green holding a 9-5 lead.
Dartmouth tallied a trio of insurance runs in the final frame after a single bookended by hit batters loaded the bases for a RBI walk, a sacrifice fly, and a run-scoring single. The Colonials faced a 12-5 deficit heading into their last opportunity to score.
GW would not go down quietly as Linn led off with a single and advanced to second on a Valos single, her third hit of the game. Another single by Gray loaded the bases with one out, and a wild pitch allowed the first run of the inning to cross home. Kovalsky singled up the middle for a pair of RBIs, but the rally ended there, putting the final tally in Dartmouth's favor, 12-8.
Costlow (10-9) took the loss after giving up nine runs on seven hits, five walks and a pair of hit batters.
Valos led the squad offensively, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a trio of runs scored while increasing her on-base streak to 14, surpassing Olympic bobsledder Elana Meyers-Taylor ('07) and matching the mark set by three former Colonials for the ninth-longest streak in program history.
Linn (2-for-3, 2 RBI, 2 R), Breland (2-for-4) and Gray (2-for-3, 1 RBI, 1 R) each notched multi-hit games as five different Colonials provided GW's 10 hits on the day.
The Buff and Blue return to action as they take on Virginia (7-25) at the Cavaliers' home field, The Park, at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
The Colonials notched their first-ever victory over UVa earlier this season, in a 16-9 triumph powered by four GW home runs. Fans can follow along with GameTracker here.
