CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Senior Victoria Valos blasted her team-leading fourth home run of the season and extended her on-base streak to 15 consecutive games as the George Washington softball squad downed Virginia, 5-2, on Wednesday evening at the Cavaliers' home field, The Park.
The Colonials (14-11) struck first and claimed a lead they would not surrender to trump UVa (7-26) for the second time this spring, and freshman Sarah Costlow notched her 11th win of the year.
Sophomore Megan Linn started off the game with a walk and stole her team-best 17th base of the season. Valos singled up the middle to put the Colonials on top and improve her current hit streak to seven.
In the third, Linn knocked in the first run of the frame with an RBI double, plating freshman center fielder Morgan Rinehart, who walked and stole second to move into scoring position. Linn was moved over to third with an infield single by speedy sophomore Bradleigh Breland. In a first-and-third situation, Breland stole second and Linn scored on an error by the third baseman to give GW a 3-0 lead with no outs. Valos then belted her fourth home run of the season and second in as many games with a two-run shot to right-center field, putting the Buff and Blue up by five after three innings.
The Colonials kept the lead for the remainder of the game, but the Cavaliers would not go down quietly, scoring one in the sixth on a double and a pair of groundouts, and notching another in the seventh. In the final frame, a two-out single and a wild pitch put a Virginia runner in scoring position for an RBI single to center field. A groundout to first would end the inning and the game, snapping a three-game skid for the Colonials with a 5-2 victory.
Costlow (11-9) tallied her ninth complete game of the season, allowing just two runs on seven hits and a pair of walks in seven innings of work. With her performance, the righty improved to fourth on the list of most complete games by a GW freshman hurler and is just two games away from matching the record for rookie wins.
Valos led GW at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a trio of RBIs and one run scored. The senior now claims sole possession of seventh place all-time with her 15-game on-base streak.
Linn (2-for-3, 1 RBI, 2 R) and Breland (2-for-3, 1 R) also tallied multi-hit games for the Colonials, while freshman Alana Anderson added a pinch-hit single to round out GW's seven-hit day.
GW will host Atlantic 10 foe St. Bonaventure for a three-game set beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday 12 p.m., with the rubber match on Sunday at 12 p.m. at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
