WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team dropped a pair of games to Atlantic 10 rival La Salle in the season's conference opener on Sunday at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials (13-10, 0-2 A-10) dropped a 10-1, five-inning loss to the Explorers (3-6, 2-0 A-10) in game one before falling, 3-1, in the nightcap. La Salle served as the home squad in both games, as the original schedule called for games in Philadelphia until winter weather forced the change.
La Salle took an early 3-0 lead in the first, as a hit batter book-ended by walks led to two singles which plated a trio for the Explorers.
The third inning would yield five more for La Salle, this time after a walk and a pair of singles loaded the bases with one out. A two-RBI double would begin the scoring and force freshman starting pitcher Sarah Costlow out of the game. With sophomore Paige Kovalsky in the circle, a walk led to a bases-clearing double to give the Explorers an 8-0 edge after three.
Junior Morgan Matetic led off the Colonials' fourth with a double and advanced to third on an error induced by Kovalsky. Junior Carlee Gray grounded into a double play, allowing Matetic to cross home for GW's first and only run of the ballgame.
A single, a walk and a hit batter loaded the bases again for the Explorers in their half of the frame. Two more walks forced in a pair of runs to make the score 10-1 and ultimately end the game, as GW was unable to score in the fifth.
The loss snapped the Buff and Blue's eight game win streak, as well as a stretch of seven consecutive victories for Costlow.
La Salle again scored first in game two after Michelle Hagarty led off with a solo home run to right field.
Getting her second start of the day, Costlow tossed a perfect second inning before yielding two runs in the third. A walk followed by a double and a single put the Explorers up, 3-0.
The Colonials got on the scoreboard in the fifth, as a pair of walks to freshman Alana Anderson and sophomore Megan Linn followed by wild pitch put runners on second and third with one out. Sophomore Bradleigh Breland reached on a fielder's choice as Anderson was caught in a run-down between home and third for the second out of the inning. Senior Victoria Valos singled to left field, her second hit of the day, to earn an RBI and notch GW's run.
Gray hit her third triple of the season and of her career in the sixth but was stranded on the bases, and the Colonials went down in order in the seventh.
Costlow (10-8) tossed a complete game, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out five.
Valos (2-for-5, 1 RBI) increased her on-base streak to 13 consecutive games, matching Olympic bobsledder Elana Meyers-Taylor ('07) for the 10th-longest streak in program history. Valos has also hit safely in the last five games.
Gray also notched a pair of hits on the day, both coming in game two.
The Colonials will host Dartmouth (5-11) on Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus before visiting Virginia on Wednesday evening.
