EUGENE, Ore. - Senior Rachel Mia became the sixth player in program history to score 100 goals in her career, but the George Washington lacrosse team could not complete its comeback in an 8-6 loss to Oregon on Tuesday evening at the Ducks' Pape Field.
Mia notched her third hat trick of the season, with the three goals all coming consecutively in the first half, while sophomore Bailey Forcier added a pair of markers.
Oregon (4-1) scored the first four goals of the game to take a 4-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the contest before Mia's string of three straight goals cut the Colonials' deficit to one, 4-3, at halftime. The senior tallied twice in 22 seconds to begin her run with the first achieving her milestone, and she added her final goal with 3:30 to go in the period.
The Ducks opened the second stanza with three in a row in a span of just 2:22 to regain a four-goal lead, 7-3, just three minutes into the frame. Forcier then rattled off back-to-back goals three minutes apart to bring GW (1-4) back within two, 7-5, with 18:07 left. After Carly O'Connell scored for Oregon, freshman Brooke Sands again made it a two-goal game, 8-6, with 15:07 remaining, but the Colonials would not score again.
Senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Jones made eight saves, while Janelle Parker stopped five shots for the Ducks.
Oregon outshot GW, 18-16, and held a 15-14 edge in ground balls and 10-7 advantage in draw controls.
O'Connell and Olivia Pyne paced the Ducks with three points on two goals and an assist apiece, and O'Connell added five draw controls.
The Colonials return to action next Tuesday, March 17, when they host Mount St. Mary's at 4 p.m. at the GW Lacrosse Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
