Naismith Trophy Midseason 30 List
ATLANTA - George Washington junior forward Jonquel Jones was named one of 30 midseason candidates for the 2014-15 Naismith Trophy, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced on Wednesday afternoon.
Jones has been named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week seven times this season, one shy of the conference record, including in five of the last six weeks, and she earned National Player of the Week honors from the USBWA on Tuesday. An A-10 Preseason All-Conference First Team and All-Defensive Team selection, Jones is the only player in the A-10 averaging a double-double with 15.3 points and 12.3 rebounds per game. The Freeport, Bahamas, native ranks fifth in the nation in rebounding and has posted a league-high 14 double-doubles this season.
The Naismith Trophy presented by AT&T is the most prestigious national award presented annually to the men's and women's college basketball players of the year. After narrowing the Naismith Trophy Preseason Watch List from its original 50 to 30 this week, the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of Selectors will reveal 10 national semifinalists on March 5. Four finalists selected by the voting academy - comprised of leading basketball journalists, coaches and administrators from around the country - will be named to the final ballot on March 20. The Naismith Trophy winner will be announced on Monday April 6, at the NCAA Women's Final Four in Tampa, Florida.
The Atlanta Tipoff Club has presented the Naismith Trophy - named in honor of Dr. James Naismith, inventor of the game of basketball - since UCLA's Lew Alicindor, later known as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, first won the award in 1969. Old Dominion's Anne Donovan won the inaugural Women's Naismith Trophy in 1983.
