WASHINGTON -- Fresh off a 13-point victory over Big Ten foe Illinois, the George Washington women's basketball team wraps up non-conference play on Wednesday evening with a 7 p.m. tilt with Hartford at the Charles E. Smith Center.
GW (9-3) won its fourth straight game on Monday afternoon, defeating the Fighting Illini, 70-57, at the State Farm Center. Four Colonials scored in double figures, led by sophomore Brianna Cummings, who tallied 10 of her career-high 20 points in the fourth quarter, when GW outscored Illinois, 25-16, to break open a two-possession game.
The win over the Illini was the Colonials' second over an opponent from the Big Ten this season. GW has gone 5-1 against teams from the Big East (Villanova), Big Ten (Iowa, Illinois) and American Athletic Conference (Houston, Memphis) this season. With a win over Hartford, the Colonials would reach double-digit non-conference wins for the second year in a row and would equal the fourth-most non-conference victories in program history.
Senior Jonquel Jones has registered 10 straight double-doubles since Nov. 21 at Stanford. A national player of the year candidate, Jones is the nation's leading rebounder (15.5 rpg) and the leading scorer in the Atlantic 10 Conference (17.8 ppg). She became the seventh member of GW's 800-rebound club on Monday, making her the third player in program history with 1,000 points, 800 rebounds and 100 blocks, joining Tajama Abraham ('97) and Tara Booker ('13).
Jones and junior Caira Washington (14.2 ppg, 9.0 rpg) form the highest-scoring and highest-rebounding tandem in the A-10, as the pair combines for 32.0 points and 26.5 rebounds per game. Both players recorded double-doubles against Illinois on Monday, the third time the duo has accomplished the feat this season.
Paced by their starting frontcourt, the Colonials lead the NCAA with 51.3 rebounds per game and have outrebounded their opponents in all 12 contests this season by an average of 17.4 per game, a margin which ranks fourth nationally.
GW and Hartford will meet for the third time on Wednesday and the first since 2008, a 67-65 victory for the host Colonials in the GW Thanksgiving Classic title game. Jessica Adair scored a game-high 16 points for GW. The teams' only other previous meeting, which occurred in 2001 at the Smith Center, was also decided by single digits -- a 70-61 victory for the Colonials. Ugo Oha paced GW with 17 points in that game.
Hartford (4-7) has dropped four in a row and six of its last seven, including a 63-57 loss to GW's Atlantic 10 rival Massachusetts last Tuesday. Deanna Mayza led all scorers with 16 points, but the Hawks were unable to hold onto a 20-point halftime lead. The only Hartford player averaging double figures in scoring, Mayza ranks 10th in the America East with 13.5 points per game, and she is ninth in assists (3.4 apg). As a team, Hartford is averaging 49.2 points per game on 32.7 percent shooting and has been outscored by 10.7 points per contest this season.
