KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Three days after defeating Saint Louis in double overtime to clinch the Atlantic 10 regular-season title, the George Washington men's soccer team has cracked the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) regional poll on Tuesday, coming in at No. 10 in the Midwest.
GW (10-7-0, 6-2-0 A-10) has won three in a row with three straight shutouts and has not allowed a goal in more than 300 minutes of action. The Colonials have allowed a league-low four goals in A-10 play with five conference shutouts behind the stellar play of senior goalkeeper Jack Lopez, who boasts a miniscule 0.27 goals-against average and a .923 save percentage in seven A-10 games, leading the league in both categories.
Junior Garrett Heine provided the heroics on Saturday evening in St. Louis, as he converted a penalty kick in the 101st minute to propel GW to a 1-0 victory and the No. 1 seed in this week's Atlantic 10 Championship. It was Heine's sixth game-winning goal of the season -- fifth-most in the nation -- and his team-best ninth goal overall.
GW is one of two A-10 teams ranked in the Midwest Region, joining Dayton (9th).
The Colonials are ranked regionally for the first time since the final poll of the 2011 season, when they were slotted fifth in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
GW faces eighth-seeded VCU in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Championship on Thursday at 11 a.m. at George Mason Stadium in Fairfax, Virginia.
